Names and distribution: The plane tree is widespread in Europe and dominates parks and avenues. The plane tree(Platanus acerifolia) gives its name to an entire family, the plane family(Platanaceae). Its leaves are similar to those of the maple tree. Other species are native to south-eastern Europe, Asia and the USA.
Wood appearance: Heartwood yellowish-light brown to rosé-colored. Steaming makes the color more even and intense. Characteristic features are the broad wood rays, which clearly determine the appearance in radial section (mirror). Otherwise fine-pored wood with a simple structure. Decorative with radial cut.
Properties: The bulk density is comparable to that of beech and oak. The wood must be dried slowly to avoid warping and cracks at the ends. The swelling and shrinkage values are average. Sycamore is easy to process and glue. Ingredients are not known. The Brinnell hardness is specified as 35 N/mm2. Like beech, the wood is not durable and can therefore only be used indoors.
Use: Furniture wood, turner’s wood, in selected qualities also for musical instruments.
