Macassar ebony

Names and distribution: Botanically Diospyros celebica, belongs to the Ebenaceae family. Origin: Indonesia

Wood appearance: Makassar ebony is one of the “colored” ebony woods and is yellowish white in the sapwood, black in the heartwood with very characteristic light yellow to brown striped longitudinal grains. The sapwood, which is usually removed immediately at the felling site by filing, can account for up to 70 percent of the trunk and is hardly ever seen in the trade as it is considered worthless and unattractive.

Properties: The heartwood (without visible growth rings) is very hard and dense. It is one of the most valuable types of wood in the timber trade. The density is 1.1 to 1.3 t/m3.

Use: Mainly for inlays and veneers, as well as for musical instruments (woodwind instruments, fingerboards, pegs, etc.) and for woodturning.
