Names and distribution: Botanically, Moena(Aniba amazonica) belongs to the laurel family(Lauraceae). Its natural habitat is subtropical humid forests. Moena is well to very well represented there and grows into cylindrical stems up to one meter in diameter.
Wood appearance: The heartwood of Moena has an appealing golden-yellow basic color with greenish-brown stripes and is reminiscent of Cabreuva parda in color and structure. Pores are fine to medium sized, medullary rays arranged in tiers and clearly visible, alternating growths occur. Overall decorative and with a striking sheen.
Properties: The density is between 0.50 – 0.70 t/m3 at 12% wood moisture. The volume shrinkage from fresh to atro is given as 9.4%. The radial differential shrinkage is approx. 3.2%, the tangential one 6.7%.
Moena can be easily processed with all standard machines. Drying is unproblematic, but should be carried out carefully depending on the thickness. Moena is permanent (class 2).
Use: Interior fittings, stairs, furniture
Replaces: oak, teak, brown cabreuva (Cabreuva parda = Myrocarpus frondosus)
