Mopane

Names and distribution: Mopane, botanically Colophospermum mopane , belongs to the Fabaceae family (legumes). Mopane is native to southern Africa. The medium-sized tree can reach diameters of up to 70 cm and heights of up to 28 m.

Wood appearance: The sapwood is narrow and white, the heartwood reddish brown, darkening in the light. Often interspersed with black-brown stripes. Pores fine and scattered, growth ring zones are weakly pronounced. Structure: compact, parallel fibers, overall plain to decorative.

Properties: The specific weight is given as approx. 1.10 t/m³ at a wood moisture content of 12%. The swelling and shrinkage values are estimated to be radial 4.0% and 5.2% tangentially, both relatively low values. Technical drying is not carried out; drying takes place slowly in the air. Can be worked well in all directions, especially good for turning. Easy to polish due to its high density, comparable to grenadilla. High hardness and high natural durability.

Use: Special wood for turned articles, carvings and musical instruments
