Botanically, Morado, also known as Santos rosewood or Pao Ferro,(Machaerium scleroxylon) belongs to the legume family. Morado is related to Purpleheart(Peltogyne spp.,) and Dalbergia nigra (Rio Palisander). The distribution area of Morado is limited to the east of Bolivia and the southwest of Brazil. In its area of distribution, Morado tends to be a rare tree species with low dominance.
The heartwood is reddish purple to light brown to black-brown veined, large color variations from trunk to trunk are common. Partly parallel fiber course, partly strongly intertwined fibers (alternating twisted growth); alkaline ingredients can cause white spots. Pores fine and scattered; very decorative.
The density is given as 0.96 t/m3 at a wood moisture content of 12%. The volumetric shrinkage from juice fresh to 12% is 10.6%, the radial shrinkage is specified as 2.9% and the tangential shrinkage as 5.9%. Morado therefore has comparatively good shrinkage and swelling values and is easy to dry. Morado is easy to work and polish. During processing, the dust can cause skin irritation and breathing difficulties. Allergic reactions have been repeatedly observed in individuals. The modulus of elasticity is given as 16,400 N/mm2 and the bending stiffness as 124 N/mm2. Although Morado is weather-resistant, it is not used outdoors.
Ensure adequate protective measures are taken during processing!
