Myrtle / Tasmanian beech

Names and distribution: The Tasmanian beech(Nothofagus cunninghamii) belongs to the beech family (Fagaceae), just like our beech trees. The evergreen tree is native to South Australia (Tasmania and Victoria) and grows to a height of 30 to 40 meters. – Note. The common English names Australian Tasmanian Myrtle or Myrtle Beech are misleading. It is not related to the myrtle family.

Wood appearance: The heartwood is pink to reddish brown, the sapwood white. The texture is often very fine and wavy.

Properties: The density is 750-880 kg/m³. Good for manual and machine processing. Precious wood.

Use: Furniture, floor coverings, moldings, musical instruments
