Padouk, West African tonewood – Tonewood

Names and distribution: West and Central Africa, botanically Pterocarpus angolensis, family Caesalpiniaceae.

Wood appearance: Coral red heartwood, clearly set off from the white sapwood, scattered pores, large pores clearly visible to the eye, plain.

Properties: bulk density at 12% residual moisture: approx. 0.85 tons/m3, good to very good swelling and shrinkage behavior, unproblematic drying even of thicknesses up to 80 mm, easy processing, above-average hardness, durable (class 1-2) fine wood

Use: Interior wood, boat building, turnery wood, musical instruments
