Panga Panga – Coffeewood

Occurrence & distribution

East Africa, esp. the south of Tanzania and northern Mozambique. Name: Milettia stuhlmannii, Fabaceae family, closely related to Wengé, established domestic market and very strong demand in South Africa.

 

Wooden picture

Fresh heartwood coffee brown, sapwood clearly defined, wavy storage cells, medium sized pores, grain mostly straight, sometimes alternating, overall plain but more lively than wengé,

 

Properties

Raw density at 12% wood moisture approx. 0.90 tons/m3, good dimensional stability, problem-free drying for thicknesses up to 33 mm, above this only slowly and gently. Good machinability, high hardness. high natural durability.

Interior and exterior wood furnishings, parquet wood, furniture construction
