Botanically, Solomon’s padouk(Pterocarpus indicus) belongs to the Papilionaceae, a subfamily of legumes. The species is also marketed as Papua New Guinee (PNG) Rosewood and is reminiscent of teak in its appearance and characteristics. Related to the Burmese padouk(P. macrocarpus) and the African padouk(P. soyauxii, P. angolensis).
Heartwood golden colored, occasionally pink stripes. Overall broader color spectrum than teak. Sapwood light pale with distinct boundaries. At the light development to uniform color tone. Pores medium to coarse, scattered and not numerous. storage cells are stored in eye-shaped fields around the pores. Medullary rays arranged very finely and in tiers, radial growth zones differently distinct. Frequently intertwined grain, sometimes wild in the flap cut, rather plain as a rift cut (stripe). Decorative overall.
Density at 12% wood moisture content is 0.65-0.72 t/m3. The dimensional change per 1% change in wood moisture content is 0.24% in the tangential direction and 0.17% in the radial direction; both low values. Salomon Padouk shows excellent stamina. Salomon Padouk dries easily and without cracking and can be worked with all tools without difficulty. Pleasantly sweet smell during processing. Decorative and smooth surfaces can be created. Good sound characteristics comparable to Swietenia.
The Brinell hardness is 35, the modulus of elasticity approx. 13,000 N/mm2. Salomon Padouk is weather-resistant (durability class 1-2).
Tends to “bleed” when fresh, i.e. soluble ingredients are washed out by rain. Appropriate measures (wet brushing, oiling, glazing) must be taken.
Interior and construction timber for interior and exterior use, boat building, for dimensionally stable frames, parquet flooring, furniture construction, musical instruments.
