Impressions of a
Trip to Guinea, West Africa
Purpose of the trip:
Contacting an exemplary forestry company that is currently examining whether it makes sense to be certified.
The products:
Sawn timber from plantations and later sawn timber from a managed natural forest.
The local project sponsor is the Centre Forestier de N’Zérékoré, which has been supported by German development aid for several years. With the aid coming to an end, the Guineans have to stand on their own two feet and are looking for business partners who will buy wood at fair (i.e. attractive) prices.
To date, certification efforts have made the least progress in Africa. Perhaps one or two things will change here in the foreseeable future.
Impressions of a
Conference in Guatemala
In March 2005, Rainforest Alliance, with the support of US-AID, organized a conference on “Sustainable Forest Management in the Peten Region, Guatemala”. The aim of the event was to provide practical information about the activities of local forest farmers and to bring suppliers of certified forest products together with buyers.
ESPEN was the only European company representative at this meeting. There was keen interest from North American buyers as well as from an Australian timber importer.

Impressions of a
Journey to the Pacific
The trip to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands in spring 2009 was used to visit our suppliers and take delivery of sawn timber. We mainly obtain the following from this region: Salomon Padouk, Vitex / Leban and coconut palm wood.
