Jelutong

Names and distribution: Jelutong, botanically Dyera costulata, is widespread in Malaysia, especially on Borneo. The species is also known nationally as Malaysian Pencil Cedar.

Wood appearance: Whitish-yellowish wood without visible transition from sapwood to heartwood, scattered pores, homogeneous, plain.

Properties: Low bulk density, approx. 0.35 – 0.40 tons/m3, unproblematic drying, but susceptible to blue stain, dimensionally stable, not durable.

Use: moldings, pencils, light construction timber – but heavier than balsa.
