Names and distribution: Zebrano or Zingana are trade names for woods from the genus Microberlinia (botanically: Microberlinia brazzavillensis and Microberlinia bisulcata), which belong to the legume family(Fabaceae). It is native to tropical West Africa. The unusual appearance of the rift-cut wood led to its great popularity. However, the high demand for this species led to both Microberlinia brazzavillensis and Microberlinia bisulcata being added to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2000.
Wood appearance: Heartwood yellowish-light brown alternating with dark brown zones, reminiscent of a zebra pattern in radial section.
Properties: The density at 12% wood moisture is approx. 730 kg/m³. Easy to machine with suitable tools. Unpleasant inherent odor when fresh.
Use: Musical instruments, veneers, high-quality interior fittings.
